Voter Information

A primary is an election that may take place within each of New York State`s official political parties. It happens before the general election and provides enrolled political party members the opportunity to nominate their party`s candidates as well as to elect various party officials. However, if a position is uncontested, there is no primary.

• New York Driver’s License number
• Last four digits of your Social Security Number

If you don’t have either of these, you may include with your registration form a copy of your non-driver ID number, a copy of a current and valid photo ID, a current utility bill, a bank statement, a government check or paycheck, or any government document that shows your name and address.

Generally, if you move you should complete the Voter Registration Form with the new information and mail it to your county Board of Elections. Please see below for specific options: 
a) Moved within your same election district? Your polling site does not change. You may still vote at your usual polling site by regular ballot. The election worker should note the new address in the registration record.
b) Moved within New York City, but outside of your old district? You should vote in the polling site of the new election district by affidavit ballot. Doing so will transfer your registration to the new district.
c) Moved outside of your election district and to New York City within 25 days of the election? You may vote at your old polling site using a voting machine or vote at your new polling site using an affidavit ballot. 
All New York City voters should confirm their polling site before Election Day by calling 1.212.VOTE.NYC.

Yes.  In New York State, if you haven’t voted in the past 4 years your registration has probably lapsed.  You will likely experience difficulty casting a regular ballot at the polls.  If you haven’t voted in 4 years you should re-register 

If you do not have a permanent address, you can still register to vote. You must list an address on the registration form.  Use the address of a relative or service provider located in the neighborhood in which you want to vote. The address that you give will determine the location of your assigned polling site, so it is important to pick a place that is convenient for you. 

You ONLY lose the right to vote in New York State if you have been convicted of a felony and are currently incarcerated or currently on parole.  Once you have completed your period of incarceration or parole you are eligible to re-register and vote.  While you are on parole, you may apply for a Certificate of Relief from Disabilities or a Certificate of Good Conduct, which, if granted, allows you to register and vote. Registered voters who cannot make it to the polls on Election Day because of occupation, business, studies, travel, imprisonment (other than felony conviction), illness, disability and hospitalization or residence in a long-term care facility may vote by absentee ballot.  Absentee voters may either vote in person at the Board of Elections office in their borough or by mail.

In New York City, you can vote before and on Election Day at the Board of Election’s Borough Offices. Absentee voting in person begins as soon as the ballots are available (at least 32 days before an election) and ends on Election Day. The hours are M-F 9 AM to 5 PM (and the weekend prior to Election Day) and on Election Day until 9 AM
 

To cast an absentee ballot by mail, you first need to be registered. Once registered, you must obtain an application for an absentee ballot either through mailing a request with name, voter registration address, mailing address (if different), reason for voting absentee, and signature, or by picking up an application at your local Board of Elections’ Offices. You can also apply by calling 1.212.VOTE.NYC, or online at www.vote.nyc.ny.us/absentee.html. You will then receive the absentee ballot in the mail and should complete it and return it to the Board of Elections. To be counted, an absentee ballot must be postmarked by the day before Election Day and must reach the Board of Elections no more than 7 days after the election.

Unless you are serving time for a felony conviction (or are on parole) you have the right to vote. If you are a registered voter you should follow the instructions above to vote absentee by mail.

You have a right to Spanish language ballots in all five boroughs of New York City.

You have a right to Chinese language ballots in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens.

You have a right to Korean language ballots in Queens.

If you notify your employer not more than ten days and not less than two days before the election that you require time off, they must provide time off for you to vote.

Si no tiene ninguno de estos, puede incluir con su formulario de registro una copia de su número de identificación de no conductor, una copia de una identificación con foto actual y valida, una cuenta actual de servicios básicos, un estado bancario, un cheque del gobierno o cheque de paga o cualquier documento gubernamental que muestre su nombre y dirección.

a) ¿Se mudó dentro del mismo distrito electoral? Su lugar de votación no varía. Aún puede votar en su sitio de votación usual mediante el voto normal. El trabajador de las elecciones deberá anotar la nueva dirección en el registro de inscripción.

b) ¿Se mudó dentro de la ciudad de Nueva York, pero fuera de su antiguo distrito? Deberá votar en el sitio de votación del nuevo distrito electoral mediante voto de affidávit o de declaración jurada.  Al hacer esto transferirá su registro al nuevo distrito.

c) ¿Se mudó fuera de su distrito electoral y a la ciudad de Nueva York dentro de 25 días de la elección? Puede dar su voto en su antiguo sitio de votación utilizando un voto de affidávit. Todos los votantes de la ciudad de Nueva York deberán confirmar su lugar de votación antes del Día de las Elecciones llamando al 1.212.VOTE.NYC.
